Sinn Fein delegation visits Sellafield and Welsh Assembly to press for closure of Sellafield

A Sinn Fein delegation led by Louth County Councillor Arthur Morgan travelled to Sellafield today (Tuesday) to press home the party's long-standing call for the immediate closure of the British Nuclear Fuels plant.

BNFL has refused to meet the Sinn Fein group. Sinn Fein will meet the local community action group, Cumbrians Opposed to a Radioactive Environment (CORE).

Tomorrow (Wednesday) the Sinn Fein group will meet a cross-party group at the Welsh Assembly and environmental campaign groups to discuss Sellafield.

Also on the delegation will be Assembly members Mick Murphy from South Down and Michelle Gildernew from Fermanagh/South Tyrone and Marie Gavaghan from Wicklow. Councillor Morgan said:

``As long-time supporters of the campaign for the closure of the BNFL-run Sellafield nuclear plant, Sinn Fein will be meeting members of the Welsh Assembly and with environmental groups in West Cumbria. We did attempt to meet with BNFL but they refused to meet with our delegation at this time. Obviously the concerns of Irish citizens mean little to this discredited company.

``Sinn Fein will be highlighting our concerns regarding the recent revelations of corruption in Sellafield and of high levels of cancer contraction on the east coast of Ireland. Irish people are asking just what will it take to shut this plant. It is clear that Sellafield is rotten to the core and it is long overdue for the Irish government to follow the lead shown by Irish citizens and have this plant closed down.''ENDS
