Sinn Fein names general election candidate for Sligo/Leitrim as Deputy Mayor of Sligo, Alderman Seán MacManus

Sinn Fein has selected the Deputy Mayor of Sligo, Alderman Seán MacManus, to contest the Sligo/Leitrim constituency at the next general election.

Alderman MacManus pledged to campaign on a wide range of issues including sharing the wealth of the Celtic Tiger, effective housing and childcare policies, improved health and education resources, securing a fair deal for Leitrim's rural communities, and opposition to unwanted phone masts.

He said that Sinn Fein is offering a republican and labour alternative to ``the stale politics of the Establishment parties - Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Labour Party - tainted by bribery, corruption or mismanagement''.

Alderman MacManus is a member of Sligo County Council and Sligo Corporation. He received over 3,200 votes at the 1997 general election and more than 20,000 votes in the Connaught/Ulster constituency in last year's European elections.

A member of the Sinn Fein Ard Comhairle for the past 18 years, Seán MacManus has played a central role in the party's ongoing peace strategy. He has been involved in several summits with British Prime Minister Tony Blair . He is vice-chair of the board of directors of the Hawks Well Theatre, Sligo, a member of Sligo Harbour Commissioners, the Border Regional Authority, and a delegate to the Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland.
