Prince Charles visit to Derry cancelled

Derry Assembly member and Sinn Fein Chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin said that the visit to Magee University by Prince Charles was obviously cancelled because the hurt and distress it has caused among nationalists has finally been acknowledged by the organisers of the event.

Mr McLaughlin said:

"Given Prince Charles's position as Colonel in Chief of the Parachute Regiment, the planned visit had gone ahead it would have demonstrated contempt and disregard for nationalist feelings, particularly during the public inquiry into Bloody Sunday when the Parachute Regiment massacred people marching for their Civil Rights.

"This invitation was especially insensitive and should never have been extended or accepted in the first place."
