Use DIRT revenue for Childcare

Responding to the latest payment of DIRT tax by NIB Sinn Fein TD Caoimhghín Caoláin has called for the entire amount of unpaid DIRT to be used by the government to provide Childcare. He said:

``What value development if children are not properly cared for? We must ensure that in this society children receive the best care, preferably by a parent or guardian on a full-time basis or else, where needed, by qualified people whose service is affordable and accessible.

``I believe that, in addition to the resources already earmarked a furthe commitment is needed which will really show the determination of government to prioritise this issue.

``I propose that the full amount of revenue accruing from payment of previousl unpaid DIRT tax by financial institutions be devoted to the provision of Childcare. I commend this proposal to government and urge them to make it a central part of the forthcoming Budget.''
