Christmas present of army barracks should be made by the Government to Dubliners for social housing

The Government should make a Christmas present of Clancy Army Barracks at Islandbridge to Dublin Corporation for social housing and sports facilities rather than sell it on the open market to commercial property developers in the New Year, Sinn Fein said today.

Sinn Fein Dublin South Central representative Aengus Ó Snodaigh said:

``With increasing numbers of homeless people on the streets and ever-lengthening queues on the housing waiting lists, it is within the gift of Bertie Ahern's government to make a practical gesture by giving Clancy Barracks to the people of Dublin as a Christmas present.

``It could make a massive contribution to reducing the housing waiting list.''

The 13-acre barracks site - larger than Fatima Mansions - is due to be vacated by the Department of Defence by March of next year.
