MacManus gives cautious welcome to Corrib gas announcement but seeks specific details

The Mayor of Sligo Sinn Fein Alderman Sean MacManus has given a cautious welcome to the Government announcement that the Corrib gas network will be extended to take in the north west region.

Speaking to a gathering of Sinn Fein election workers in Manorhamilton, Alderman MacManus said:

``This announcement is to be welcomed. However, more detail is required from the government as to when this will actually take place. The Government need to specify exact dates as to when this work will commence, when the work will be completed and when the gas will be available to the people of the north west, consumer and commercial alike. For too long the people of the north west have been treated as second class citizens by successive administrations. If this announcement means that this is about to change and that we will receive the benefits of the Corrib gas network as soon as anyone else then that is good news for the region.''

He concluded: ``However, I remain very cautious. I would hope that this announcement is not like some other Fianna Fail announcements of late which have made claims about non-existent plans for dual carraigeways from Mullingar to Sligo. The Government should now spell out in clear terms the detail of this plan. Only then can we judge whether the Government are serious about delivering to the north west or whether they are engaged in a pre-election ploy to fool the people of the region.''
