Sinn Fťin TD slams incinerator approval The decision by Meath County Council to approve a planning application by Indaver Ireland for a waste incinerator at Carronstown, Duleek, on the Meath/Louth county border, has been slammed by Cavan/Monaghan DŠil Deputy, CaoimhghŪn ” CaolŠin. The Sinn Fťin TD has described this announcement as "disturbing but not unexpected". He said: "Given the decision by Minister Dempsey and his Fianna FŠil/Progressive Democrat cabinet colleagues to dump democracy with the passage of the mis-described Waste Management (Amendment) Bill, there can be little surprise that plans were already well advanced to cater to the demands of the pro-incinerator lobby. That the elected voices of the people of Co. Louth had rejected such a proposal and had their decision affirmed in the High Court, has counted for nought with this Minister and Government. The important amendments that I and my Sinn Fťin colleagues in Monaghan County Council successfully steered through the council debate on the regional plan as presented by the appointed consultants, have now also been dumped by this Minister." "It is important that people know that this Government, who made much of their 1999 Constitutional Amendment that saw Local Democracy enshrined in the Constitution wilfully undermined our system of local government, granting the power over decisions regarding waste to the City and County Managers and with no recourse to the Council chamber. The elected voices of the people have been cast to one side," said Deputy ” CaolŠin. The Sinn Fťin TD stated that he expected that the campaigning groups opposing the planned incinerator would bring their case to An Bord PleanŠla.
