Sinn Fein to challenge BNFL

Sinn Fein Spokesperson on the Environment and Louth County Councillor Arthur Morgan will attend a conference on Sellafield this weekend, which will be addressed by representatives from BNFL.  The conference is organised by Fine Gael Senator Fergus O'Dowd and will take place in Drogheda on Saturday next.

Cllr. Morgan said:

``I have accepted Senator O'Dowd's invitation to attend this weekend's conference because I feel that any forum provided to me to challenge British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL) should be availed of fully.

``People are becoming increasingly concerned of the dangers that Sellafield poses to citizens here.  My position and that of Sinn Fein is well known: The plant is lethal and should be closed.  The recent granting by the British government of permission to develop a Mixed Oxide (MOX) plant is an insult to the people of Ireland, particularly those on the East Coast.

``Sinn Fein will continue to campaign for the complete closure of Sellafield.  I look forward to the opportunity to express the views of my constituents to a representative of BNFL on Saturday.''
