Sinn Fein to meet Romano Prodi

Sinn Fein TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin will tomorrow meet the President of the EU Commission Romano Prodi.  The Sinn Fein deputy will represent his party when groups opposed to the Nice Treaty meet Romano Prodi in Dublin.  Responding to the reported comments of the Commission President Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

``Romano Prodi is reported as saying that EU enlargement can proceed without ratification of the Nice Treaty.  This is precisely what NO campaigners have been saying all along.  I will be exploring this point with him and also putting to him Sinn Fein's view that the Nice Treaty has to be renegotiated and that an unchanged text cannot put before the people in a replay of the referendum.

``I will also be making clear that the result of the referendum showed that Irish people do not want the EU to be turned into the `world power' which Romano Prodi has advocated.  We wish to retain the EU as a partnership of equals and we oppose deeper integration, a two tier EU and EU militarisation.''
