Speedy implementation of commitments urged

Sinn Fein Assembly member for Newry and Armagh and party spokesperson on the demilitarisation issue Conor Murphy has said that he looks forward to the speedy implementation of the commitment given by John Reid today to the reduction in the numbers of British troops and installations.

Mr. Murphy said:

``I note that John Reid has announced the British government will remove four British Army installations and I look forward to the speedy implementation of the rolling programme of demilitarisation they have committed themselves to.

``This should see the reduction in numbers of British military personnel and installations across the six counties. I would urge the British government to move speedily on this commitment.

``Demilitarisation is an essential and integral part of the Good Friday Agreement and is vital to its full implementation and to any process of conflict resolution.''
