Sinn Fein take chair of Dundalk Urban District Council

Sinn Fein Councillor Sean Kenna became the Chairperson of Dundalk District Council when the body held its Annual General Meeting last evening. Cllr Kenna is the first Sinn Fein representative to hold this important post.

Cllr Kenna has been a member of Dundalk UDC since 1994 and has served as vice chairperson for the past twelve months. He is one of two Sinn Fein Councillors on the Council, the other being Kevin Meehan.

Sean is 64 years old and is married to Eileen, they have 10 children and 9 grandchildren. He is a full time public representative and has spent his entire adult life as a dedicated republican and trade unionist

Louth County Councillor Arthur Morgan congratulated Cllr Kenna on the news:

``A great many people throughout County Louth, and indeed bordering counties are aware of the tremendous work that Sean Kenna has done for the town of Dundalk. It is fitting that he has now become the town's first citizen.

With a Sinn Fein chairperson, the people of Dundalk will have a working man representing the ordinary people of the town, providing the dynamic for change and increased openness in local government. This Council term will be distinguished by its republican and labour character and Councillor Kenna will ensure that the council truly represents the ordinary worker and local communities in Dundalk.I wish Sean, his wife Eileen and their family the very best and I'm sure Sinn Fein members the length and breadth of Ireland will do the same.''
