Sinn Fein TD urges rejection of Treaty of Nice

Commenting on the publication today of the Government's wording to amend the Constitution to ratify the Treaty of Nice, Sinn Fein TD CaoimhghÌn Ó Caoláin said:

Sinn Fein will be urging a rejection of the Nice Treaty and a `No' vote in the referendum.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

``The Treaty of Nice will greatly increase the power of the larger EU member states as against the smaller states. This is a further and serious step in the process towards a centralised EU super state with its own army, its own foreign policy and its own currency.

``The Government wants the people to answer `Yes' to the question posed by EU Commission President Romano Prodi when he asked if we want to turn the EU into a world power. We in Sinn Fein are firmly opposed to the creation of such a power. Instead, we seek economic co-operation on an equal basis between the nations of Europe. We will be campaigning vigorously for a `No' vote.''
