Costings row descends into farce

Sinn Fein TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said the row over the costings of the election manifestos of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Labour and the PDs had descended into farce. He said:

``Yesterday we had the farcical spectacle of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Labour and the PDs scrambling to find a meeting place to agree a panel of economists to whom they were going to submit their manifestos. They should know that economists are as political as anyone else. Yet these parties were willing to surrender their politics to economists as if they were all-knowing gurus.

``Indeed most of the prominent economists in this State are conservative and right wing. This exercise merely shows the lack of real difference between the conservative parties. This election is about issues. It is not a brawl between accountants.''
