Sinn Fein to brief Diplomatic Corps on Nice Treaty

Sinn Fein TD for Dublin South Central Aengus Ó Snodaigh and head of the party's International Department Joan O'Connor will brief members of the Diplomatic Corps on the party's position on the Nice Treaty at 11am tomorrow, Monday 14th October 2002, in Leinster House.

Sinn Fein will hold a press conference afterwards at 2pm in Buswells Hotel where we will discuss the briefing and our position on the issue of enlargement.

Speaking prior to the briefing Deputy Ó Snodaigh said;

``Over the last three weeks there has been a lot of misinformation on the issue of enlargement so we feel it is important that we talk directly to the representatives of other European countries to outline clearly Sinn Fein's position on this matter in particular and on the Nice Treaty in general.

``We will be outlining the fact that Sinn Fein and the vast majority of citizens in this state believe that EU enlargement is positive. We welcome new member states to the EU if their people vote for membership and this can happen regardless of the Nice Treaty.  Sinn Fein is opposing Nice for three main reasons: the people already rejected this Treaty in referendum,  it changes the structures of the EU to the advantage of the larger states and it further erodes our neutrality.''
