Sinn Fein's Wood `Astonished' By Lack Of Support For Waiver Motion

Sinn Fein's Mayo election candidate Vincent Wood described the failure of Mayo County Councillors to support his colleague Gerry Murray's motion on waivers for Bin Charges as `Astonishing'.

Charlestown based Sinn Fein Councillor Gerry Murray had raised the issue of refuse charge waivers being extended to old age pensioners, the disabled and those on unemployment assistance at the last meeting of the Council.

``Given that there has been a huge hike in refuse charges this year, it is irresponsible for those in a position of influence within the council not to do all in their power to assist the weaker in society. Members of Mayo County Council were given the chance to show that they could support a measure that would ease the burden on the disadvantaged and with very few exceptions they failed.

``With job losses and economic uncertainty throughout the county, it is truly astonishing that many of our local politicians failed to support Gerry Murray's motion'', he said.
