Crowe calls for sanctions on businesses guilty of Euro fraud

Sinn Fein TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has said that the suppression of the results of a Euro consumer study, commissioned on behalf of the government, would be an insult to the intelligence of the public. He demanded that the report be published as soon as possible and that sanctions be taken against those found guilty of ripping off consumers following the Euro changeover.

Deputy Crowe said:

``Last Autumn I called for new laws to be introduced to stop businesses pushing up prices in the change-over to the Euro. This was in response to huge concerns raised at the failure of government to deal with the matter properly. It was clearly insufficient for the government to give monitoring powers to the Director of Consumer Affairs without any powers of sanction.

``Six months on it is clear that consumers have been ripped off. It is not good enough for the government to wash their hands of this problem. The survey, commissioned by Forfas, should be published as soon as possible and the government should then take action against those guilty of ripping off consumers.''
