Ferris: Who Benefits From Gas Deregulation?

The Sinn Fein Spokesperson on Natural Resources Martin Ferris TD is to question Minister Noel Ahern in the Dáil on the implications of the latest announcement of further deregulation of the gas industry. This will allow a further 150 industrial users to access gas supplies without dealing with Bord Gáis.

According to Deputy Ferris, this is the latest step towards fulfilling the EU objective of privatising the energy sector in each of the member states. ``Coming as it does in the wake of the refusal to allow Bord Gáis access to the Seven Heads gas, and following recent price increases, it would appear that the Department is willing to allow the interests of commercial users supersede those of domestic consumers many of whom find it difficult to meet ever increasing fuel bills.

Ferris has tabled a question for the Minister seeking a full statement on his plans for the future of the gas sector under the new conditions.
