Sinn Fein to put Anti-War Motion to Dublin City Council

Sinn Fein has called for cross-party support to facilitate the debate of a motion the Sinn Fein Group intends putting to the Council tonight calling for a halt to the drive towards war on the Iraqi people.

Cllr Larry O'Toole said: "Last week Sinn Fein in Derry were successful in passing a motion condemning the war at City Council, joining Galway to become the second city in Ireland to come out against the war. That motion was passed with the support of the SDLP and we hope that tonight all parties can put aside their political differences and vote for peace.

"It is my hope that tonight Dublin will be added to the growing list of cities, including 57 American cities like Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco, that oppose the war. I have put down an emergency motion and I would ask for cross-party support to facilitate the debate of the motion and for this support to also extend to passing it in order to send a message that the people of Dublin are absolutely opposed to this war.

The motion reads:

'That this Council supports the anti-war rally called for the 15th of February and calls for a stop to the drive towards war on the Iraqi people.'
