Brian Cowen questioned about Fermanagh British Army harassment by Sinn Fein TD

Sinn Fein Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Gerry McHugh has welcomed the commitments given by Brian Cowen on the need for the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement and the need for `swift and ongoing' demilitarisation in response to a question from Kerry TD Martin Ferris about the harassment of nationalists in Fermanagh.

Mr. McHugh:

``Sinn Fein, in recent negotiations, continue to press for British government to live up to its commitments in the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement and for rapid progress on demilitarisation in particular.

``Through our TDs in Leinster House, Sinn Féìn are able to put pressure on the Irish government to live up to its commitments to nationalists throughout Ireland.

``In recent weeks the level of British Army harassment of nationalists in Fermanagh has been on the increase and there have been a number of incidents that have highlighted the need for rapid demilitarisation.

``I welcome the commitments given by Brian Cowen on the need for full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement and the need for `swift and ongoing' demilitarisation in reponse to a question from Kerry TD Martin Ferris, who was able to hear first hand about the experience of nationalists in border counties on a recent visit to the north.''
