Bill of Rights first step in enhancing and harmonising human rights standards

Sinn Fein Equality and Human Rights Spokesperson, West Belfast MLA Bairbre de Brún, speaking at a Human Rights event organised by Limavady College has said that a Bill of Rights first step in enhancing and harmonising human rights standards across Ireland.

Ms de Brún said:

``Sinn Fein is committed to the creation of a broad ranging Bill of Rights for the North as the first step towards enhancing and harmonising human rights standards throughout the island of Ireland. We have highlighted the need for this for some years now and ensured that the issue was addressed in our submission to the talks that led to the Good Friday Agreement.

``The Bill of Rights is an integral component of the Good Friday Agreement and the work flowing from the agreement must now be taken forward in a dynamic way. A comprehensive Bill of Rights can serve as a guarantor of the vision of parity of esteem and equality for all, which the Good Friday Agreement enshrines.''
