Gweedore community devastated to learn of 200 more job losses

Sinn Fein representative for Donegal South West Pearse Doherty said that there is huge anger and disappointment in the area this evening at the announcement that Comerama, a yarn manufacturer, is closing with the loss of 200 jobs. This brings to 1,000 the number of job losses in the Gweedore Industrial Estate in the last three years.

Mr. Doherty said:

``The news that Comerama is to close, with 200 job losses, is devastating to the people of this area . Over the last three years we have seen factory closure after factory closure, with 1,000 jobs lost in the Gweedore industrial estate alone. There is huge anger that there has been such an inadequate response from the government.

``People don't want to hear that a commission is to be established to look into this matter. There have been enough reports. What is now required is action. Investment must be made into sustainable industry in the areas that need it most. Donegal is one such area and I am calling on the Tanaiste directly to target this area for investment and inward development.'' ENDS
