Ó Caoláin welcomes establishment of Remembrance Fund

Sinn Fein Dáil leader Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin has welcomed the establishment by the Irish Government of the Remembrance Fund for victims of the conflict in the 26 Counties. The Fund will allocate ¤3 million in 2003. Deputy Ó Caolain said:

``I welcome the establishment of this Fund and the ¤3 million allocation this year. It is a positive, if long overdue, first step. This year's funding should be seen as a first instalment. Since the Victims Commission reported in 1999 I have repeatedly raised in the Dáil the need for its recommendations to be implemented. I raised the issue with the Tánaiste in the Dáil as recently as this month. It is regrettable that it took the government so long to put this key recommendation in place.

``The Government should now move to implement the other recommendations of the Report, including the publication of the Crowley Report on the shooting of Aidan McAnespie by British troops on the Monaghan/Tyrone border.''ENDS
