Ferris: ``Farmers Not Benefiting From Food Profits''

The Sinn Fein Spokesperson on Agriculture and Rural Development, Martin Ferris TD, has claimed that recent statistics prove that while consumers are paying more for meat, that the benefit from this does not accrue to farmers, nor indeed to those who work in the processing industry. He was speaking as Irish Food Processors announced a massive increase in profits.

Deputy Ferris said; ``Farmers have consistently made the point that while consumers continue to pay increased prices for beef produced in this country, that they don't receive a commensurate return from the producers. That has been highlighted this year by the conflict between farmers and companies like Irish Food Producers. It is unacceptable that these companies should be earning such large profits while farmers, workers and consumers have to put up with price cuts, low wages and higher retail prices.''
