Trimble failing constituents

Statement from Sinn Fein Assembly Member for Upper Bann Dr. Dara O'Hagan accusing David Trimble of `abandoning and ignoring' an entire section of his own constituents.

Dr. O'Hagan said:

``Mr. Trimble as First Minister and MP for Upper Bann has a particular responsibility to his constituents living on the Garvaghy Road. Under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement the residents of the Garvaghy Road have the right to live free from sectarian harassment.

``The nightly intimidation and attacks on nationalists are being ignored by Mr. Trimble, who is clearly failing in his responsibilities under the agreement and indeed his terms of office. The situation in Portadown is becoming more dangerous each day.

``These parades are illegal yet are being tolerated on a nightly basis. Residents are living in fear. Those associated with the Orange Order are involved in a campaign of terror aimed against a vulnerable Catholic population. This situation has resulted from a failure of Mr. Trimble and other unionists to embrace and implement the equality provisions contained in the Agreement.''
