Sinn Fein Defends Letter of the Agreement

Responding to this morning's commments by Ulster Unionist MP Ken Magennis, Sinn Fein Chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin has said that his comments are not only at variance with the text of the Good Friday Agreement but also with his party leader, David Trimble.

Mr McLaughlin said:

``We have said time and time again, the letter of the agreement is crystal clear. There is no precondition to Sinn Fein's entry into the Executive and All-Ireland Ministerial Council.

``Even David Trimble has admitted as much when he told the assembly on January 18th that Sinn Fein `may be right'. His comments are recorded in the Hansard and are as clear as the agreement. Monday should see the final hurdle cleared. There should be no further delay to the establishment of the Executive.''
