McAliskey decision welcomed

Sinn Fein's Mid-Ulster MP Martin McGuinness has welcomed the decision by Jack Straw not to proceed with the extradition of RÛisÌn McAliskey.

Mr. McGuinness said:

``I welcome the decision that the British government does not intend to proceed with the extradition of RÛisÌn McAliskey to Germany. What this means is that RÛisÌn is now a free woman and can return home to her family.

``Today's decision stands in marked contrast to the inhuman and degrading treatment meted out to her by the previous British administration. I've always believed that there was no case against RÛisÌn and that the previous British government were driven by spite in its treatment of her.

``I wish her a speedy return to full health and would like to take this opportunity to pay the respect and praise due to her partner, her mother, father, family and friends and to all the solidarity groups throughout the world who campaigned tirelessly to achieve this decision.''
