`Totally independent investigation required' - De Brún

Sinn Fein Policing and Justice Spokesperson, Bairbre de Brún has rejected the rationale put forward by the Chief Constable of Kent for the involvement of the RUC in the investigation into the murder of Rosemary Nelson.

Ms de Brún said:

``The ICPC adjudged the RUC incapable of impartially investigating the threats against Rosemary Nelson's life. How can Mr. Phillips now judge them capable of investigating her murder?

``The only mechanism that has a possibility of gaining any degree of credibility in the present climate is a public independent, international investigation and inquiry.

``This is not an independent inquiry. It is dependant on co-operation from the very force that stands accused of threats to Rosemary Nelson's life. If it is to have any credibility there can be no role for the RUC.

``Previous investigations by English Policemen, where collusion by the RUC is suspected, have all proved to be ineffectual and succeeded only in raising more questions rather than providing answers.''ENDS
