Implementing the Agreement

Sinn Fein Chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin commenting this evening on the invitation by the two governments to Sinn Fein, the SDLP and UUP to meet the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, and the British Prime Minister Tony Blair in London on Monday said:

``Sinn Fein hopes that next weeks engagements will see the governments moving to implement the Good Friday Agreement. Sinn Fein is not assured that they have moved off the agenda which underpined the Hillsborough Declaration.

``The two governments must appreciate how much confidence in the process has been undermined over the last year. The failure to implement the Agreement is destroying the very ground it rests upon.

``The two governments cannot pass responsibility for this onto the parties. They have the primary responsibility for advancing the peace processs and forging ahead with the many provisions of the Agreement. They must take the lead.

``Sinn Fein's approach next week will be to engage positively and to urge the governments and the other parties to adhere to the letter and the spirit of the Agreement.''
