Change the Face of Politics - Adams

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams, Vice President Pat Doherty and Ard Chomhairle member Martin McGuinness this morning held the party's final election press conference. The Sinn Fein President described Thursday's election as potentially ``a turning point which can change the face of electoral politics on this island.''

Mr. Adams said:

``This election can be a turning point. On Thursday voters have a choice between the hopeless politics of the past or of moving forward into a hopeful new future.

``Sinn Fein believes that this election provides a new opportunity to restore the peace process. We seek a mandate for credible peace talks with the unionist people; and a new future as equals for all the people of this island.

``Our canvas returns indicate a strong result for our party right across all constituencies. West of the Bann the nationalist electorate know that they have the ability to change the face of electoral politics.

``The election of Sinn Fein MP's will send a resounding message to the incoming British government that inclusive dialogue and honest negotiations, based on equality, are essential to the ending of conflict and for the achievement of a negotiated peace settlement.

``We are seeking a pact with the electorate. Sinn Fein is a party to be trusted.

``Our message in this election in one of hope, for a new beginning.''
