Adams addresses anti-drugs rally in Darndale

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams speaking at an anti-drugs rally in Darndale this evening commended the local community for their courageous work in the fight against drugs. Mr. Adams was accompanied by Sinn Fein candidate for Dublin North East Larry O'Toole.

Mr. Adams said:

``I want to begin by commending the courageous work being undertaken by ordinary people throughout this area in the fight against drugs. You have worked in your community for over 15 years in an attempt to halt the spread of addiction and drug dealing despite little or no state support. Successive governments' stood idly by while young people in this area were gripped by heroin addiction. I offer my sympathies to the families and friends of all those young people who have died as a result of drug addiction.

``Sinn Fein activists, like Larry O'Toole, have been active in the anti-drugs movement since its inception in the early 1980's. I want to say to everybody here tonight that Sinn Fein will be here, elections or no elections as long as the problem exists.

``For many years nationalist communities in the north were written off and marginalised. But they got off their knees to demand change. In Darndale you are off your knees and you won't stop marching until you get justice and equality.''
