Irish government must not shirk its responsibility

Sinn Fein's Dublin EU Candidate, Sean Crowe, commenting on the ongoing controversy about the Ireland v Yugoslavia match said:

``Sinn Fein has no problem with Ireland using any opportunity to tell Slobodan Milosevic's regime of Irish abhorrence of his brutal policies against the Kosovars.

``But the onus for action should not be shirked by Fianna Fáil and the PDs and passed on to the FAI and Mick McCarthy's side, either as a team or individuals. We should use our neutrality in a positive way in order to secure a resolution to this conflict.

``I hope that in the future that establishment parties will display similar outrage and readiness for principled boycott action when Irish teams face representative sides from brutal regimes such as Turkey, Indonesia and Mexico - respectively responsible for their ethnic cleansing of the Kurds, Timorese and the native Mexicans/Zapatistas.''ENDS
