Listening Devices Uncovered

Statement from Sinn Fein candidate for Newry and Armagh Conor Murphy on the discovery of complex listening and camera devices in the Cornonagh area of Crossmaglen last night.

At around 7.45pm local people discovered a camera concealed in a hedge row facing the home of a member of the South Armagh Residents and Farmers Group. On closer examination listening equipment and a series of further electronic devices was discovered.

Mr. Murphy said:

``This is the same area that British soldiers saturated last month discharging a shot in the process. It has now become clear that their saturation of this particular area at this time was to install these listening devices. At that time Sinn Fein raised the issue with the Irish Government and will do so again on this occasion.

``It is clear that elements within the British military are still operating on a security agenda. This is clearly unacceptable at a time when the vast majority of people are moving towards a new and democratic future. It seems that these people are unable to play any constructive role in developing a new society and indeed are intent on attmepting to push a negative and out dated securocrat agenda.

``This discovery is one of a series made throughout the six counties in the last number of weeks. Mo Mowlam must now act to disclose how many of these devices are hidden in and around peoples homes and ensure that they are removed immediately as a crucial part of the process of demilitarisation.''
