RUC Collusion in Finucane Killing

Statement from Sinn Fein Assembly member for Mid Ulster Martin McGuinness MP calling for a fully independent international inquiry into the killing of Pat Finucane in light of todays court appearance by self-confessed RUC agent William Stobie.

Mr. McGuinness said:

``The revelation that the man charged with the killing of Pat Finucane is a former member of the UDR and an RUC agent proves again the widely held belief that there was collusion between the RUC and the killers of Pat Finucane. Ronnie Flanagan claimed today that John Stevens was only able to charge the man with Pat Finucane's killing after receiving information from the RUC. The RUC must have had this information at the time Ronnie Flanagan was head of the special branch. He sat of this information for ten years.

``Ronnie Flanagan as chief constable of the RUC and a former head of special branch has a particular responsibility to clarify his role in this investigation.

``The only way in which circumstances surrounding not just the killing of Pat Finucane but the entire issue of collusion can be addressed is through an independent inquiry. In advance of this the full report of the original Stevens inquiry must be published.''
