Bloody Sunday inquiry must have confidence of families

Sinn Fein Assembly member Martin McGuinness MP has called for the new inquiry into Bloody Sunday to ensure that it has the complete confidence of the families.

Mr. McGuinness said:

``It is absolutely essential that, 26 years after the sham of the Widgery tribunal and the long campaign for a new inquiry, the families of the Bloody Sunday victims have complete confidence in the ability of the new inquiry to provide the mechanisms which will enable the truth of Bloody Sunday to emerge.

``There should be no attempt by the British government to limit the scope of the inquiry or to place obstacles in the path of the families as they seek out full disclosure of the facts leading up to, during and after the tragic events of Bloody Sunday.

``The families of the Bloody Sunday victims are entitled to know why fourteen men were murdered by the Parachute regiment on that day and only an inquiry which is impartial, comprehensive and has the confidence and support of the families can provide the means by which this can be achieved.''
