Sinn Fein call for legislation on cigarette additives

Tallaght Sinn Fein Councillor, Seán Crowe has called on the government to introduce legislation to force tobacco companies to list the additives on their packaging. Crowe claimed they were `` adding to the addiction cocktail in cigarettes and possibly triggering cancer in smokers.

Councillor Crowe said:

``I am calling on the government to act on the European Legislation to list what additives are used in tobacco products. We are living in an era where detailed labelling of food contents is now expected. Cigarettes packets as well as carrying a Government Health warning should give a detailed breakdown of what exactly is added to cigarettes.

``There is over 600 additives already registered for use in tobacco products but there is no control on the different combinations many of which more than likely trigger cancer in smokers.

``Surely cigarette smokers should have the right to know what is involved in the lethal cocktail they are actually inhaling.''ENDS
