Bogside Residents Resilience Commended

Sinn Fein MP and assembly member Martin McGuinness has commended the Bogside Residents Group on the resilience displayed in their determination to reach a voluntary accommodation with the apprentice Boys which will go a long way to easing tension in the city on Saturday.

Mr Mc Guinness said:

``The agreement removes any premise for the RUC to place the citizens of Derry under curfew. It will prevent major disruption to commercial life and allow relatively free access for the citizens of Derry into the city centre. It also has beneficial effects for isolated nationalist communities in other areas such as the Lower Ormeau, Dunloy and Bellaghy who, because of the efforts of the Bogside Residents Group, will not have to endure Loyal Order marches on Saturday.

``I would appeal to nationalists to exercise the same discipline they displayed during the height of the Drumcree crisis when the intransigence of the Orange Order was exposed to the eyes of the world and nationalist community refused to be provoked.

``I hope the agreement brokered between the Bogside Residents Group and the Apprentice Boys will encourage the other Loyal Orders to enter into dialogue with various Residents groups.''
