Nelson Challenge - Maskey

Statement from Belfast Sinn Fein Councillor Alex Maskey, commenting on the release of British spy, Brian Nelson.

Cllr. Maskey said:

``I am currently discussing a legal action with my solicitor in relation to the released British spy Brian Nelson.

``I am concerned to establish two points: the legitimacy, in legal terms, of the deal made by Sir Patrick Mayhew, when he was Attorney General for Britain. This deal led to the dropping of murder charges against Nelson, a lenient prison sentence and his transfer to a gaol in Britain.

``I am also concerned to challenge the RUC's failure to inform me that one of their agents was attempting to murder me over a period of five years.

``The British government's concerns about defending democracy against violence rings particularly hollow when one considers their conspiracy with Brian Nelson.''
