Release Dublin Bombs File Challenge to Fianna Fáil TDs

Fianna Fáil TDs have been challenged to publicly honour the motion unanimously passed by the last Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis for the Department of Justice and Gardaí to release all the files on the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan bombings in which 33 people were killed and more than 250 injured.

Victims' relatives have been seeking access to the 23-year-old files to help them take a case against the British Government to the European Commission on Human Rights. Last week, they lost a Dublin High Court action to have Garda information released.

It was the worst loss of life in any single event in the history of `The Troubles'. No one has been prosecuted.

Car-bombs were detonated in Dublin on 17 May 1974, at the height of the evening rush hour. Explosions in Parnell Street, Talbot Street, and South Leinster Street, near Trinity College, claimed the lives of 26 people. Ninety minutes later, another seven people died in a car-bomb attack in Monaghan.

The loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force was blamed for the attacks but there has been strong evidence of involvement by British Military Intelligence.

Sinn Fein's Seán Crowe said in Dublin:

``The families are justified in questioning why, after 23 years, the secrecy over this issue continues.

``They are also justified in seeking the support of Fianna Fáil TDs in honouring the commitment of the last Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis which called on the Garda Commissioner to release the vital documents that will enable Patrick Doyle to proceed with his case at the European Commission of European Rights against the British Government.''

Mr Doyle lost his daughter and two grandchildren in the Talbot Street blast.

The Sinn Fein general election candidate added:

``It is only with the active implementation of the Ard Fheis pledge by Fianna Fáil that justice can at last be seen to be done.''
