Sinn Fein welcome statement

Statement from Sinn Fein Chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin on todays statement from the organisation responsible for the Omagh bomb declaring an end to its campaign.

``Sinn Fein welcomes the decision by this organisation. Our thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones and those who are recovering in hospital at this time. We lobbied for this outcome. It is what nationalists and republicans, indeed all the people of this island wanted to see happen.''

Mr. McLaughlin continued:

``This decision is as a result of the political pressure that republicans and others exerted. We made it clear to them and to anyone thinking about supporting them that their position was wrong and they should stop. The two governments response in rushing through draconian legislation was wrong. This is a political conflict which requires political measures, not repressive ones to resolve it. This group responded to the political pressure that was put on them, not the measures taken by the two governments.

``The focus now must be on fulfilling the desire of the Irish people for progress in the peace process. That means implementing the agreement in full and getting the executive, the All-Ireland ministerial council and other structures up and running.''
