SF TD calls for wider scope for new tribunal

Low pay report contrasted with McCracken

Speaking in Leinster House on the Report of the McCracken Tribunal Sinn Fein TD for Cavan and Monaghan Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin supported calls for a wider scope for a new tribunal, in particular in relation to the Ansbacher account.

Deputy ó Caoláin said:

``Stronger legislation is needed not only with regard to offshore financial dealings by those in public office, but in the whole vast area of the export of private and corporate wealth generated in this state.''

Deputy O Caolain highlighted the publication at the same time as McCracken of an ESRI report which showed that the 26 Counties has highest proportion of low-paid workers in the inustrialised world:

``For too long the close relationship between the wealthiest in our society and the most powerful politicians has bought first-class citizenship for a privileged few, whom public policy is designed to benefit most . Tens of thousands of people are thus excluded from the Celtic Tiger economy.''
