New Institutions inter-linked and inter-dependent

Statement from West Belfast assembly member, Bairbre de Brun, following the tri-lateral meeting between Sinn Fein, David Trimble and Seamus Mallon. The Sinn Fein delegation included Gerry , Alec Maskey and Bairbre de Brun.

Ms. de Brun said:

``Sinn Fein wants to see the shadow Executive, the all-Ireland Ministerial Council and other structures established immediately to ensure progress. There can be no Assembly unless there is a functioning Executive.

``Sinn Fein wants ten meaningful departments agreed and established as a matter of urgency. One of these Ministries should be a Ministry for Children which Sinn Fein proposed on Monday. These departments must have a substantive remit, be adequately resourced and led by a Minister.

``The current structures are outdated, undemocratic and confusing and therefore unacceptable.

``The new institutions must have an early and radical impact on a wide range of social, economic and cultural issues, in particular the entire equality agenda must be effectively addressed. Therefore we need to develop meaningful departments which can deliver a creative and radical programme.''
