Colin Duffy appeal outcome welcomed

Sinn Fein Justice Spokesperson Barry McElduff has welcomed the successful outcome of the Colin Duffy appeal.

Mr. McElduff said:

``I share in the joy of the family and friends of Colin Duffy today in the conclusion of his successful appeal. I would point out however that Colin has spent three years in prison for something of which he was completely innocent. He was convicted on the word of Progressive Unionist Party spokesperson and UVF gunrunner Lindsay Robb in front of a Diplock court.

``This case was another travesty perpetrated in this corrupt system which passes as a judicial system in the North of Ireland. These non jury courts should be scrapped immediately to prevent these type of biased verdicts being handed down.

``The type and quality of evidence accepted to convict someone in a Diplock Court would not even be sufficient to warrant charges being preferred in any democratic jurisdiction anywhere in the world.''
