Bar on public service positions in north must be removed

Sinn Fein Assembly spokesperson for Cross Border Development, Pat Doherty, has called for the removal of a `UK Nationals only' bar from Public Service positions in the north.

Mr. Doherty said:

``The recent case where a Fire Officer in Dublin was not permitted to apply for a position with the NI Fire Authority because he was not a UK National raises serious questions as to the British government's commitment to implementing the all-island and cross-border elements of the Good Friday Agreement.

``To debar someone from applying for a position in the north on the basis of nationality could be construed as being racist and has serious implications for the hundreds of thousands of people actually living in the North who do not regard themselves as `UK nationals' but as Irish citizens.

``The British government should explain exactly where it stands in relation to its Public Service posts and whether it will recognise the birthright of the people of the North to be accepted as Irish as outlined in the Good Friday Agreement.''
