Death of Sinn Fein Councillor Pat McGeown

Sinn Fein Leader on Belfast City Council, Councillor Tom Hartley in a statement this evening said:

``It is with the deepest regret that I have to announce the death of my friend and colleague Councillor Pat McGeown.

``To his wife Pauline, to his father, his children and family, and to all his many friends and colleagues I extend my sincerest sympathy.''

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams tonight expressed his ``profound shock'' at the news of Pat McGeown's death.

Mr. Adams said:

``Pat McGeown was a dear friend and comrade whose loss is a sad blow to Republicans everywhere.

``Despite serious ill-health, caused by his 47 days on hunger strike in 1981, Pat never gave up. He worked tirelessly for Sinn Fein and for those in west Belfast who elected him as their councillor.

``Pat Beag was also the leader of Sinn Fein in Belfast, a difficult task which he undertook with great energy.

``To Pauline, to his father, family and friends, I offer my deepest condolences on this sad occasion.''
