Support for primary school protests

Sinn Fein Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has expressed his support for the protest action by the Irish National Teachers Organisation in four schools this week, including Castletara National School, Ballyhaise, County Cavan. The INTO is seeking adequate resources for all national schools, in particular for those with special needs.

Backing the INTO initiative Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

``It is totally unacceptable that in this day and age 78% of national schools have to engage in voluntary fund-raising to ensure that they have adequate materials to fulfil the requirements of the Department of Education's curriculum. Nearly half of the national schools have no secretary and nearly half also are not swept or cleaned daily. Small schools in isolated rural areas are particularly badly effected.

``The Minister for Education has said that primary education is his priority. But the fact remains that it is in primary education that most disadvantage and underfunding exists. The INTO campaign deserves support.''
