RUC changes purely cosmetic

Statement from Sinn Fein Assembly Member and spokesperson on policing Bairbre de Brun on Mo Mowlam's prediction that yesterdays changes in the RUC oath will make the force ``more efficient, effective and accountable.''

Ms de Brun said:

``Tinkering with the edges of the RUC and the Police Authority will not deliver the sort of accountable and community based policing service that people expect in light of the Good Friday Agreement. A new approach to policing is required. The first step in developing an effective policing service is the complete disbandment of the RUC. The community has no faith in the RUC.

``Mo Mowlam should not be engaging in cosmetic changes to the RUC while the policing commission has yet to gather its evidence let alone report its findings. People want and deserve a completely new accountable, unarmed and community based policing service.''ENDS
