Andrews remarks - `regrettable'

Sinn Fein National Chairperson and Derry City Councillor Mitchel Mc Laughlin has described remarks made by the new Minister for Foreign Affairs David Andrews on Radio Ulster this morning as ``regrettable''.

Councillor Mc Laughlin said:

``The remarks made by Minister for Foreign Affairs David Andrews on Radio Ulster this morning are at odds with the stated position of the Irish government through the Taoiseach and the former Minister Ray Burke.

``Perhaps they were unconsidered, off the cuff remarks by someone getting to grips with a difficlut and complex job. That is no excuse.

``The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has outlined his and his governments position, that a United Ireland is the preferred outcome of his government and of the majority of the Irish people and that he will represent nationalist Ireland in these negotiations.

``It is regrettable, to say the least, that his Minister for Foreign Affairs, in one of his first interviews, would seem to undermine that position.''
