RUC caught spying

Statement from the North Belfast assembly member, Gerry Kelly, accusing the RUC of ``spying'' on community workers in the Ashton Centre, in the New Lodge area.

Mr. Kelly said:

``Today at mid-day an RUC jeep parked across the road from the Ashton centre. One of the workers inside the centre noticed a RUC man with a camera filming the centre before driving away. The workers concerned contacted me and I in turn contacted the RUC at north Queen Street for an explanation of the behaviour. They claimed that the RUC patrol was on a ``training exercise'' but failed to explain why they were secretly filming the Ashton centre.

Mr. Kelly concluded:

'' The RUC were caught spying on the centre by the workers and they needed to state publicly why they were doing so. This area extensively at the hands of loyalists murder gangs over the years and some of these murders have arisen out of collusion between the RUC and loyalists. Why were the RUC filming this centre and what use will the film be out to now?''
