Sinn Fein Councillor Targeted

Statement from Sinn Fein Councillor Alex Maskey, commenting on the targeting by loyalists of Lisburn Councillor, Sue Ramsey and a number of people in the Springhill area of West Belfast.

Councillor Maskey said:

``Councillor Ramsey was informed this morning by the RUC that a false number plate bearing her car registration was found in the Tennents Street area of the Shankill Road. The RUC refused to give any other details to Ms. Ramsey. It is most likely that loyalists intended using a car similar to Ms. Ramsey's in an nationalist area using the cover of her legitimate registration.

``This targeting of Ms. Ramsey has to be seen in the context of the recent split within the CLMC (Combined Loyalist Military Command) and subsequent attacks which have taken place in loyalist areas. Set against this has been the continuing targeting of Sinn Fein activists including the party President Gerry Adams last month.

``In recent days the RUC have visited a number of men living in the Springhill area of west Belfast warning them that loyalists have their details. They refused to inform the people concerned how the loyalists got these details. I am calling on the RUC to confirm or deny that loyalists now have access to their files on nationalists.''
