Redundancies signal end of era

The announcement by Avonmore, the food conglomerate, that it is shedding 200 jobs at its Rathfarnham plant has been described as ``the end of an era''by Sinn Fein spokesperson Seán Crowe.

Mr. Crowe said:

``The shedding of 200 hundred jobs by Avonmore Creameries has dealt a body blow to the people of Rathfarnham and areas like Tallaght, where a large proportion of its workforce had been located. The announcement by Avonmore that a large proportion of these redundancies would be voluntary will not lessen that blow.

``The dairy has been located in Nutgrove, Rathfarnham for as long as living memory and has been the cornerstone of local employment for generations of families. These redundancies, voluntary or otherwise, are distressing news for the families affected particularly so close to Christmas.

``The announcement will come as a complete surprise as there has been no suggestion that the Rathfarnham plant was not making a profit. The Dublin market is highly profitable and many would have thought that a plant located in the city would have been an advantage rather than a disadvantage. The redundancies would appear to be more about making Avonmore the fourth largest Dairy company in the world, more competitive Internationally, than any local factor.

``The 200 redundancies will signal the end for the dairy in Rathfarnham and is clearly the end of an era.''
